Rex shared his wedding plans with Rob, who would be in England by then…
We clicked bottles. “I guess I won’t make it, but I’m sure it’ll be one hell of a party.” Rex’s expression clouded briefly.
“Yeah, Violette’s already told me Hank has to be the best man. He and I have been together forever. And there won’t be many others there, but we’ll be thinking of you, Rob.” So that was it. Another friendship ebbing ever so quietly away. Yet Rex did his best to hold on to what he could.
“You and Hank and me. We’ll always be pals. Remember the Three Musketeers: ‘All for one and one for all.’ That’s what your grandma got us to say.”
He was right… I recalled her constant injunction that we three must enjoy the good times while they lasted. Indeed, at the very moment, she and my grandfather would be sitting together on the veranda at the Point … And I hoped one of their favourite tunes was playing…
And of course, even if it’s the happy recollections that we’re inclined to cling to, it’s those sad ones that actually stay with us longest. What’s more, they’re the ones that create the most influential memories. If you agree, add a comment as an illustration.
